Adana Governor Hüseyin Avni Coş (Josh) is a small man with a big mouth. But that doesn't stop him from being widely despised in Adana. He was put there because of his obvious talents with language, one he shares with the Turkish prime minister. And his timing is impeccable. November 10, the day Mustafa Kemal Atatůrk died, is an important day in Turkey. Everything stops in the nation at 9:05 am, the time of his death. Sirens sound, traffic halts and people bow their heads in remembrance. And since Turkey is a secular democracy thanks to Atatůrk, secular, modern-thinking Turks take this day seriously.
This year marked the 75th year of his death. Almost 2 million people visited Ataturk’s tomb in Ankara. Millions more paid their respects in cities, towns, and villages throughout the country. And in Adana, too. Governor Coş was returning in his limousine accompanied by his entourage and the usual police protection. Ministers, governors, and Erdoğan, in particular Erdoğan, require squadrons of protection. They are booed everywhere, particularly at athletic events. Such is their power. Such is their captivity. And so the unfortunate governor, safely inside his shiny black limousine was passing through a crowd in Adana, his home base. His limo was recognized and the people chased after the vehicle waving their Turkish-Atatůrk flags. The governor waved, perhaps thinking they were “friendlies.” Mistake number one. No one carrying an Atatürk flag is a friend to an AKP politician, inside a limousine or outside. The crowd was raining boos, catcalls and whistles. The governor grew angry. Then came mistake number two. The governor opened the door and got out.
He engaged the crowd. And the crowd engaged him. It was no contest. But he had cops. So he started fingering people to be arrested. One took particular exception to the governor’s similarity to a Nazi and may have muttered something about the governor’s heritage. Who knows? It was very noisy. The governor’s jabbing index finger marking those disrespectful enough to be punished also loosened the governor’s tongue. And it was then that he uttered his famous last words: “Allah belanı versin diyen o gavatı alın” (“Arrest that pimp who said 'God damn you!'”)
Later, after he and his cronies had scurried away, he lied. Mistake number three. He had not said “gavat” (pimp) but “kavas," he claimed. “Kavas” supposedly means "a man who walks around and rambles." Of course this is a nonsensical alibi. He also claimed to be defending the honor of the prime minister. Ten people were arrested and detained overnight. Nine were fined 186 Turkish lira presumably for exercising their democratic rights to peacefully assemble and protest their grievances. At the end, caught in the web of deceit that he had woven, he admitted to calling the citizen a pimp. Coş is typical of his ilk, and typical of his prime minister. They all lie with impunity, big, bold lies. They have made the words democracy and justice and human rights lies in Turkey. But treason (vatan hainliği) still means treason in any language.
The larger meaning of this incident is this. Turkey is under occupation by a internal political force empowered by the needs of the United States of America. The violent, disrespectful and indeed treasonous behavior of the ruling party speaks volumes in support of this reality. So what did the governor mean by calling the citizen a “pimp?” Does the governor know what the word means? He and his fellow AKPs have a lot of trouble with the meaning of words—words like equality, respect and truth.
A pimp is a man who controls and rents women for the purpose of earning money though their behavior, primarily their sexual activity. A pimp can also be a person who persistently and/or extravagantly sells or promotes something, an object, a man, a woman or an idea. Pimping also means to dress up or adorn something to make it more showy or desirable. So who are the men, within Turkey and without, who have been using women for their own dark-minded purposes, adorning them in political symbols, extravagantly and persistently promoting a female behavior that has no basis—NONE!— in the Koran. Costumes are imposed on women, on their brain-washed heads and constricted bodies, to overturn the way of life of a secular nation. Such is the truth in Turkey. In this process of subversion, incredible wealth has fallen into the laps of AKP party members, their cronies and their collaborators. The imagined torturous deprivation of women because they were not allowed by law to wear headscarves inside universities was the first trick turned by the ruling party. Wearing the headscarf became symbolic of religious piety. The implication to the rest of Turkish womanhood? They are imperfect Muslims, maybe infidels, or worse. And AKP has been turning similar tricks for over a decade. So who are the pimps?
Of course, the word has a sexual connotation. Let’s examine that. What group in this country has objectified women? Who is the biggest meddler in women’s sexuality and their sexual organs? The number of children, the method of delivery, their right to abort? Who worries about women’s cleavage? And whether girls should wear skirts in school? Isn’t this sick curiosity bordering on the perverse? And who obsesses about the sexual behavior of college men and women? Who censors what we can see on television? What books we can read? Whether a woman can shake hands with a man? Whether we can kiss on the street? Interestingly, they don’t worry about men kissing each other on the street. Why not? And who asserts that co-educational dormitories are like brothels? And this nonentity of a political hack calls a patriotic citizen a pimp? There is a word for people like this—SICKO!
Even the diehard supporters of AKP should be embarrassed by the sexual tirades from these twisted thinkers, this psychologically unstable government. But AKP minds are similarly twisted in their very political purpose. Deceit, dishonor, violence, injustice, all presented under the cover story of Allah, all of it treasonous. It is ridiculous. It is intolerable. It is sickening. We are neither their nor America's whores!
