“In the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding on the back of the tiger ended up inside.”
John Fitzgerald Kennedy Inaugural Address January 20, 1961
INSIDE THE TIGER Sitting Pretty, Sold Out, Killing Hope, Death
This is an autopsy of a political party that has been dead for over 75 years, to be precise, since 9:05 am, 10 November 1938.
And today, the Turkish air reeks of lies, deceit, politics and money. And so today, I must write of a particular treachery, a treachery most foul, a profound betrayal of trust that reaches back to the founding of the republic. Simply stated, the coming elections will determine whether secular, democratic Turkey lives on or dies. The treachery and incompetence which I will describe, if allowed to stand, will be the nation’s final killing blow.
The major opposition party, the CHP, is famous for its treachery. Next to losing, it’s what it does best. It has been losing ever since it first (and lastly) came to full power in the first multi-party election in 1946. Founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923, if he were alive he would sue the party for defamation of character. No doubt he remains eternally embarrassed by such an abysmal performance in his name. Worse than that, CHP has even betrayed its own name, the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi.
What’s in your name? The first word is Cumhuriyet. It means “republic” which is the condition of governing where the people are sovereign and not subjects. The important word here is “people.” Accordingly, all power transfers from the people to their elected representatives. The word “republic” comes from the Latin translation of Plato’s Republic by Cicero. The Greek politeia derived from the word polis (city-state) was rendered by Cicero as res publica and means “matters of the public.”
The second word, Halk means “people”,the same meaning as the word “demos” in demos-kratos or democracy, the rule by the people, kratos meaning rule. As in the above paragraph, the important word, indeed the only word is people. And it is in this fundamental word where this treachery resides. CHP has betrayed its people. People and more people, the CHP’s name says it but its actions for the people…what? The people call for unification of the left wing to bring a united front against the fascist government. The CHP has blatantly refused the obvious consensus of their constituency. Instead the party prefers to sit by itself as a 20% oppositional party. The people and simple arithmetic and common sense be damned. No wonder it has been a long-term loser.
To be or not to be Consider the party’s bizarre motto “CHP varsa herkes için var” (“If CHP exists it exists for all”). Ironically and sadly, it describes the essential intention of the party. Why describe the intention in the conditional tense, that is, with an “if”? “If” statements are inherently weak, and frequently stupid. Take a state in America for example. Here’s the stately Latin for the state of Michigan: Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice. It means, “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” Not very inspiring, except for peninsula seekers. But at least it suggests some action. The CHP motto, the words that describe the essence of the party, are completely and strangely passive.
For example, “if the CHP exists” (CHP varsa). What energy is meant in these words? What vitality? None. The language, whether Turkish or English, lays like a clod on the ground simply existing? Or maybe not existing? Who can rely on an institution that may or may not exist? Furthermore, what conditions determine its existence? And the last clause, “it exists for all.” So what? Does it mean that just because it exists all people are expected to be part of it? Is it meant to convey open-mindedness and tolerance? Or does it mean that only if CHP exists can people be a part of it? This is of course a nonsensical idea? In any case, a motto should express a principle, a goal, an ideal. What the CHP’s motto expresses is a mystery unless one is somehow moved by passive arrogance, a deadly prescription for political failure. And one fitting for this party today.
In a parliament which resembles a thieves market, CHP continues to sit and pretend that their oppositional vote matters. In a parliament whose majority party rules by subversion and secrecy, CHP continues to sit and pretend that their opinion matters. In a parliament that conspires with outside forces to destroy institutions of government such as the nation’s defense forces and judiciary system, the CHP sits and pretends that they are representing a side of a sovereign nation. In a parliament whose ruling party has conspired with outside forces to falsely accuse and falsely imprison journalists, military officers and other dissenters in flagrant violation of their constitutional rights, the CHP continues to sit and ponder its role in this travesty of justice and human rights. How disgusting! How cowardly! Meanwhile democracy and the nation’s penal system have collapsed. But CHP has yet to notice. Instead it fights against corruption, an issue that goes nowhere with the Turkish electorate. Meanwhile CHP ignores the real issue, the FACT that the nation is under occupation, its democracy nonexistent, and violence fills the hearts of the completely corrupt ruling party. In other words, CHP does not know what to do.
FUNDAMENTAL BETRAYALS: Committing Hari-Kari on Kemalism’s six arrows
The party has six fundamental principles of Kemalism derived from the revolutionary foundational policies of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. They are symbolized in the CHP logo as six arrows.
Republicanism-The sovereignty of the people, that is, the people own the state. People are not subjects of the state. And importantly, state assets belong to the people not to the government. The power of the government over the people is controlled by constitution protections, namely through the separation of the judiciary, executive and legislative functions. Accusation: You have made allegiances with forces that are adversaries of Turkey. First, the movement of Fethullah Gülen, an undereducated religious charlatan beloved enough by America to be sponsored by the CIA for a Green Card. CHP has entered into an unholy political alliance with this subversive movement to capitalize on the chaos that currently rules in Turkey. Even schoolchildren know that Gülen is a long-standing threat to secular Turkey. Even recently fertilized embryos know that the Gülen Cemaat (movement) and the AKP government illegally imprisoned and eventually destroyed Turkish military forces. But CHP seems not to since it now actively supports those who ignore and violate the constitutional protections of the people. Second, the American ambassador to Turkey, one Francis J. Ricciardone, a representative of the hostile government of the United States of America which sanctioned the deadly force used by the AKP government during the Gezi Park Resistance. Additionally, the American ambassador was a party to the emergency importation of tear gas and other toxic substances employed by the Turkish police forces, itself divided into Gülen followers and AKP adherents. By such treacherous behavior, the CHP has defiled the notion of republicanism regarding the inherent sovereignty of the Turkish people. The nation itself is controlled by outside powers (Gülen and the CIA) and traitors within (AKP and elements of CHP).
Populism- We, the people, govern. You, our proxy representatives, operate only through our collective assertions. Populism includes taking care of people. It means equal rights for all, including education and literacy. It means jobs and dignity. It means life. Accusation: When has CHP made an initiative to better the deplorable conditions in our villages, the poverty, the suffering, the complete lack of social services like emergency health evacuation or village medical services or inadequate schools? When? Those opposed to the fascist-rule lament that most of the poor people vote for AKP. Have you, CHP, figured out why? Answer: because you never see them. For decades they have been ignored particularly in the east. You never get out of your red chairs. And every election you lose. It’s called “passive arrogance.”
Nationalism- The sense of belonging to an identifiable country with identifiable values. We, the people, ARE the Turkish nation, anti-imperialist and indivisible. National sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the people. There are no racial, religious or ideological describers needed. The “Republic of Turkey” is more than sufficient. Accusation: For a decade the ruling party has been out to destroy the secular nation. The Constitutional Court said so years ago. And now the AKP has destroyed the Constitution Court. And you, CHP, what have you done for the nation. I know…you have sat. Never did the idea cross your collective mind of physically removing yourselves from the den of iniquity called parliament. Never did you join us in the streets to really fight the struggle against occupation. You sat. And millions filled the streets and got gassed and beaten by the fascists. How are you, CHP, not like these fascist pigs?
Secularism- There can be no national religion. And there is no religious interference or intervention by the government in the peoples’ religious beliefs or absence thereof. Accusation: Today, Turkey stinks from religious interference. The Gülen Movement (cemaat) has infiltrated every level of government. And it is widely touted by the habitually lying prime minister to be a “parallel state.” For years he collaborated with this enemy and for years CHP ignored it. And now CHP collaborates with Gülen. Are we so stupid as to vote for you, CHP? Why, you couldn’t even embrace the slogan “We are Mustafa Kemal’s soldiers. No, no, you whined afraid of offending the fascists, “we are Mustafa Kemal’s CITIZENS.” More accurately, you are Mustafa Kemal’s traitors. You are the enemy. And this will destroy you.
Statism-The state is responsible for economic and social policies, the opposite of anarchism. It actively intervenes to provide for its citizen-owners. Accusation: We see how you have intervened. While the AKP destroyed the labor unions and social network, you sat. Thanks to you, there is no political voice for people in need. While the AKP plunders the nation’s wealth, you, the CHP, plunder the people’s morale.
Revolutionism-the nation will continue to develop and modernize, bettering its social conditions. No backwardness. Accusation: A joke. No comment necessary.
THE END The vital signs of Turkish democracy have been extinguished. We all know it. In the hands of a religious, fascist, imperialist government, literally all of the public’s (the people’s) assets have been plundered, sold at bargain prices. The natural environment plundered, relationships with neighboring countries defiled, the reputation of the country is at rock-bottom. Simply stated, the people have been robbed. The country is in a thieves' sack. And you, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, help carry it.
THIS IS FOR YOU KlLIÇDAROĞU Are you serious with Mustafa Sarıgül as a candidate for mayor of Istanbul? A hair-gelled thousand dollar suit who shouts the platitudes of the old way of politics. Plus he’s as slick as his hair, rumor has it that he’s in the cemaat too. It seems so since you, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, have purged your party of the followers of Atatürk. Where are the young people, the kids of Gezi Park? Just what principles do you now avow?
You praise the deceitful, corrupt prosecutor, Zekeriya Öz, one of the leaders of the unconstitutional hoax called Ergenekon. This thief of justice, this treasonous hack, suddenly, in your eyes, became honorable. Kılıçdaroğlu, you are indeed “today’s man.” And for that your party will be destroyed.
You ignored eight million people of the Gezi Park movement. 150,000 gas canisters sickening and maiming and murdering Turkish youth and you select Mustaf Sarıgül’s ex-wife as a candidate for Beyoğlu? Are you serious? Where is your common sense?
And where is your energy for freeing the many hundreds of falsely imprisoned patriots, innocent victims of the criminal collaboration of Tayyip Erdoğan, Fethullah Gülen and the CIA? And now, when even the AKP admits that the trial was a ruse and the evidence manufactured, even now, still you cannot act. Maybe CHP was in on the crime?
In the last election you pandered for the sympathy vote and put some of the prisoners on the ballot. They delivered and your vote rose by four million. Very clever. You thought you had done it. But you had done nothing. You managed to spring the now parliamentarian prisoners from jail. But what about the others? Are you so afraid of Doğu Perinçek and Tuncay Özkan? You should be. You even spurned a well-constructed, legal plan from the president of the Turkish Bar Association, Metin Feyzioğlu. You think you know so much. But if it’s not your idea, it’s not worth considering. You’d rather fight corruption. Just like you had promised to research Tayyip’s eight Swiss bank accounts. Never heard a word since. Some fighter. Just like you had promised to research the election fraud in 2007. Never heard a word since. Baykal pinned CHP rosettes on the bosoms of covered women back then. Then he argued with Erdoğan about his expensive wristwatch. The election results were disastrous. Last election you argued about Tayyip’s villa and he argued about yours. And that was that. These are amazingly stupid issues. And now you shout about corruption when the real issue is the total collapse of the judicial system. No wonder you and your party always loses.
And by running to Abdullah Gül and the ruthless American ambassador and the treacherous American politicians and the even more treacherous Fethullah Gülen, you have broken the bond with the Turkish people, the “halk” in your party’s name. The votes you gain from your love affair with the cemaat will be vastly offset by the ones you lose from people like me. You have played with our honor and betrayed our trust. And you will be punished at the ballot box, your treacherous political stupidity revealed to all.
When you fail, you will understand what all this means. Your party will be destroyed. And so will the entire, corrupt Turkish political system. The body politic will collapse and there will be much blood in the streets. Anarchy reigns. But you will see nothing, understand less and remain as you are today: oblivious. This will mark the true beginning of the new Türkiye.
